Filtration allows for the exclusion of organisms based upon size. There are many types of filtration techniques, but when sterilizing a system membrane filtration is used. Membrane filtration traps contaminants larger than the pore size on the surface of the membrane.
A filtration technique where suction is applied to the mixture of solid and liquid being filtered so as to pull the liquid through the filter. The filtration can be enhanced using a vacuum, rather than simply using gravity. Vacuum filtration can be achieve using both the Disposable Vacuum Filter units or a Buchner Funnel and Flask. For smaller samples, a Syringe filter can also be used in application of smaller samples.
